The tenement museum tours verified that not much has
changed throughout time. The tours gave an insight of how people lived when they
first settled in this country. It also shows how there was NO ONE out there to
advocate for their human rights. No one should be subject to live or work in the
conditions that they did. As the
time went by and people became more aware laws and policy started being passed
to help alleviate the conditions for the less fortunate, lived in but even still
they still lived in horrendous condition. Living in a tenement where seventy to
one hundred people are living while sharing four outhouses is not morally right.
They were living with no electricity, running water, and extremely limited
space. Specifically learning about the families makes everything so much more
real and seeing where they actually lived hits home because I saw that growing
up. Still in 2013 there are people living in similar
conditions. Throughout the tours the common themes were losing jobs, having to make
ends meet, taking care of your family and who is deserving and not deserving of
the services available at the time. The social services set in place at the time
were residual and hard to qualify for. What made one family deserving of those
services and others were just the fact that a man was in the family or one
spouse was working and the other was not. Although one spouse was working and
what they made was still not enough, they still did not qualify for help. Everyone should be entitled to food, home and clothes. Not only a home with four walls and a roof but a home where a human is able to live in. Seeing the hardships the immigrants went through
you wonder how can anyone allow that to happen. The working conditions were
horrible as well. It took hundreds of women to die in a fire in order for laws
to be enforced. Humans should be treated like humans and given the respect they
deserve regardless of their social status.

Lasting Impressions
The New York experience class has taught me about places in the city I would have never experienced without this class. The class took me from ebing someone from a suburb on Long Island with roots dating back to the early 1800's here in New York that never stepped foot past 59th street before this class. Now I have experienced more then my share of New York City and all it has to offer. Although we have only scratched the surface of this great city I know can say I have truely experienced the greatest city in the world. The city that never sleeps has taught me more then I knew it even had to offer.
